A 13-year-old Dalit girl in Khammam district of Telangana was set on fire by her employer’s son after she resisted his sexual advances. The girl sustained 70% burn injuries and incident came to light weeks after it happened when she revealed the incident to her parents.

As reported by the police, the victim who was from Pallegudem village, had been working as a domestic help at the house of Allam Subbarao and September 18, Subbaro’s son Maraiah tried to rape her. As the girl refused, Maraiah set her on fire and escaped from the spot.

The girl was admitted in a private hospital for treatment by Subbarao’s family who tried to hide the incident. Recently, the family told the girl's parents that she suffered injuries during work, and when the girl regained consciousness on Monday, she revealed the incident to her father and he filed a complaint. Police have registered a case under Sections 376, 307, 354 and 506 of IPC and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.
