Theatres and multiplexes have been run at 50% capacity across the country. But Tamil Nadu is now the only exception. The TN government on Monday allowed 100% occupancy, removing the covid-related restriction on seating capacity. Other Standard Operating Procedures, such as wearing face masks mandatorily, shall remain in force.
The new rule has come as a blessing for exhibitors and distributors against the mega Pongal release, 'Master'. Thalapathy Vijay enjoys superstardom in the State and his fans are expected to watch the action drama, also starring Vijay Sethupathy, in large numbers. The changed seating capacity norm will help them find tickets more easily than otherwise. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the film will release on January 13 simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu. Theatres in the Telugu States will be running at 50% capacity as of now.
Simbu-starrer 'Eeswaran' is also going to hit the screens for Pongal.
With Tamil Nadu experimenting with 100% seating capacity, other States may follow if theatres don't end up creating clusters.
