The Modi government will soon resolve to open 100 additional airports by 2024. The cost of this endeavour is estimated to be Rs 1 lakh crore.
Starting 1,000 new routes connecting smaller towns and villages is the main aim of this infrastructure plan. The domestic aircraft fleet will stand doubled to 1,200 by 2025. In 2016, 75 of India’s 450 runways were functional. About 38 airports have been added to the nation's kitty since 2014.
The aim of India is to have 450 commercial airports by 2035.
Some commentators are not fine with this air connectively expansionism. "Why does Latur need an airport? Or Saifai? We should concentrate on 3-4 large scaled-up airports only - Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, perhaps Chennai," says Somnath Mukherjee, a columnist.
