10 newborn babies die in major fire at hospital

In a tragic accident, ten newborn babies were killed after a massive fire broke out in the newborn baby unit of District General Hospital in Maharashtra's Bhandara. The incident happened at around 2 am on Saturday. After noticing smoke coming out from the neonatal section of the hospital, the staffs of the hospital rushed to the place and tried to rescue the babies.

District civil surgeon Pramod Khandate said that there were 17 babies in the unit and seven were rescued. "There were fire extinguishers and staff used them while trying to douse the fire. There was too much smoke," he added. The rescued babies were shifted to the other units. The infants were aged between a month and three months, he said.

The cause of the blaze in the four-storeyed building is yet to be ascertained but could have been caused due to an electrical short circuit, Khandate said. The exact cause of death would be ascertained after postmortem, he added.
