10 Best Tamil Films of Sridevi - A Tribute

Sridevi, one of the most loved heroines of Tamil cinema ever left the world suddenly immersing millions of her fans in sorrow. Here we take a look at ten of the India's First Female Superstar's most memorable films.

Moondru Mudichi

At the very beginning of her career itself, K. Balachander gave Sridevi a very tough role of a woman who loses her lover (Kamal) to the machinations of an evil man (Rajini) and how she turns the tables on him by becoming his step mother. Barely into her twenties Sridevi showed such maturity and stole the show from a in form Rajini in the film.

Gayathri

Sridevi played the title role of an unsuspecting young girl who gets married to a blue film maker (Rajinikanth) and her struggle to escape his clutches. The song Vaazhve Maayama is evidence of her acting skills.

16 Vayadhinile

This Bharathiraja film is a trendsetter in many ways firstly taking Tamil cinema out of the studios to the real locations and secondly for making one the most genuine coming of age story of a girl. Sridevi was again pitted against future superstars Rajni and Kamal and still managed to stamp her authority to the character Mayilu making it immortal.

Kalyanaraman

In her first commercial hit, Sridevi had two shades to her character, one of an innocent girl in love with an imbecile (Kamal) and after he is killed becomes shell shocked until his twin comes to her rescue. She lent the romantic edge to the film's success.

Sigappu Rojakkal

Once again Bharathiraja cast Sridevi as one of the victims of a psychopath ( Kamal) who ultimately makes him love her due to her perseverance to save him from himself. Another standout film for the superstar actress.

Moondram Pirai

Many at the time were unhappy that Kamal got the National Award for this Balumahendra film while Sridevi too deserved one. But in people's minds it is Sridevi as the amnesiac who turns into a ten year old girl who endeared herself to.

Johnny

Rajini had dual roles of a barber and a conman in this Mahendran film and Sridevi gave a neat account of herself as a singer in love with the con-man. She got to lip sync for two out of the world Ilayaraja songs Yen Vaaniley and Kaatril unthan geetham.

Varumaiyin NIram Sivappu

KB's timeless classic 'Varumaiyin Niram Sivappu' dealt with the rampant unemployment issue of the time and Sridevi played a impoverished girl who chooses the poor hero (Kamal ) to a rich man (Pratap Pothen). Sridevi's expressions to the song Sippi irukuthu muthum irukuthu is magical so is her realistic performance throughout the film.

Meendum Kokila

Sridevi 's first Filmfare Award came for this film in which she portrayed a meek housewife who has to endure her husband's (Kamal) infatuation towards a film actress (Deepa). There was no looking back for Sridevi after this film and within five years migrated to Bollywood.

English Vinglish

Sridevi's comeback film after several years made a huge impact at the all India box office as well as being the official entry at the Academy Awards. Sridevi was very keen that her performance as an innocent housewife finding her way in a foreign country to be seen by the Tamil audiences. She requested Ajith to do a cameo which he readily obliged without taking compensation and also extensively marketed the film in Tamil recalling her days in Kollywood with a lot of emotion.
