Director Gauri Shinde says that English Vinglish is a film inspired by her mother whose discomfort with English language did not stop her from realizing her full potential as a human being, a mother, a wife and a professional. "It is my way of saying 'sorry' and 'thank you' to my mother and a tribute to women. The film is also an ode to New York City, where my journey as a filmmaker began and continues," she adds.

EV is the story of a woman who does not know English and is made to feel insecure by her family and society at large. The film is a light-hearted yet touching and transformational journey of Shashi. Circumstances make her determined to overcome this insecurity, master the language, teach the world a lesson on the way to becoming a self-assured and confident woman.

The film has been shot mostly in New York and captures the inherent struggle of many people all over the world with the English language. Hilarious, touching, sensitive, this film marks the comeback of India's biggest female star ever, Sridevi.
