The latest generation has changed the rules for a khakhi cop in films. They want more action, more thrills and everything in excess. In short they feel they want to be “not police but scoundrels (police illa porukki)”. Of course Vikram rendered the punch dialogue in ‘Saamy’ and it caught on. Vikram’s tryst with khaki started with ‘Dhill’ and touched the peak in ‘Saamy’. The aggressive ‘Saamy’ even captured the imagination of the super star Rajini ruing why he hasn’t got a role like that in his young days.

‘Saamy’ wrote the modern grammar for Tamil cop films. Now Vikram plays a civilized cop in Hindi ‘Raavanan’. Mani will make it look better we trust. Will Vikram return to the earlier cop attitude in the Boopathy Pandian’s film, we have to wait and see.

One intriguing thing is that our ultimate star hasn’t tried a full fledged cop film yet. In spite of being in the A-list of stars today Ajith has not worn the uniform in its full effect. The closest he came in doing that was in ‘Kireedom’. He was super cop in ‘Main Hoon Na’ inspired ‘Aegan’ but he was an under cover cop in civil attire. Same is with Vijay. In ‘Pokkiri’, the only police story he succeeded he played the role much similar to ‘Saamy’ only in attitude throughout the film except for the climax fight.

There is one actor who ensured his first police story is not just another film and that was Suriya. Suriya’s ‘Kaakha Kaakha’ was a milestone film and Tamil film audience had never seen such a suave, elegant but point blank police officer until then. Anbuchelvan IPS will be remembered as long as SP Chaudhary and Alex Pandian are remembered. (Of course we don’t deny equal credit to Gautham Menon who made it possible). Now again in ‘Singam’ Suriya has proved he is one of the most fitting actors to make a cop role look realistic. The roaring success of ‘Singam’ is proof enough.

There were other stars also who tried and are trying to do their best. The ever patriotic Arjun is a famous cop in films. ‘Kurudhipunal’ being his best so far. Vishal in ‘Satyam’ tried his best but the audience preferred to see him as the lovable boy next door only. Mohanlal in Unnai Pol Oruvan and Narain in Anjathey justified their presence.

Here we do respect also the character artistes who excelled as police officers. Particularly Major Sunderrajan. He is a legend in his own right with his majestic personality and unique dialogue delivery. He commanded the same respect every time he threw a police file on the table and explains his deputies about how the con men team is to be arrested.

The profession shows the authority and there are a lot of cop stories in the making even now. Arjun in ‘Maasi’, Cheran in ‘Yutham Sei’, Vikram in an untitled film are some of the films that will hit the theaters this year. Even the younger stars like Karthi, Jayam Ravi and Bharath are said to keen on doing a memorable cop film in their career.

Arjun, Kutrapirivu At the end of it while giving all the due respects to all the film makers who make the police force proud of guarding our lives and belongings we are also compelled to say please show the cops in right spirits and make them look authentic every time. Many times the directors miss on some details. Like wearing wrong shoulder and collar ranks. Even in the recently released ‘Kutra Pirivu’ Srikanth should not be wearing collar band as he is only a Superintendent of Police and not a Senior Superintendent. Also must be reduced are using police as mostly wrong doers and comedians.

We salute the forces that guard us! We will make the proud even in cinema.
