The dubbing other language films in Kannada was stalled in early 1960 by the bigwigs of the Kannada cinema industry and literary giants supported it. A few attempts to bring in dubbing films to Kannada failed miserably.
Now the point what the national award winning actor director Shivadwaj is making is debatable. Allow dubbing for three other recognized languages of the Karnataka state Tulu, Konkani and Kodava. All these language films that touches the roots of our culture and tradition should be dubbed in Kannada is what Shivadwaj emphasizes.
Affected deeply in financial management of his best regional film in Tulu language Gaggara director Shivadwaj has come to this opinion of seeking the permission to dub three other recognized languages films to Kannada. In a shoe string budget Shivadwaj directed the Tulu film Gaggara and producers Gurudutta and Durganand have not seen return of one rupee from the film. Gaggara was made in 2008 in Rs.13 lakhs shooting in 12 days in 16 mm camera.
What happens when such dubbing is allowed? Such market less language films would find a market and the investment is assured from the television channels. The screening of such films in regular theatres is not promising returns says Shivadwaj from the book of his experience.
Dubbing to Kannada from non Kannada films are not permitted. What about Karnataka state recognized languages Tulu, Konkani and Kodava to Kannada? It is time for the big bosses in the Kannada cinema industry to answer.
