All eyes are on the Madras High Court, as a case related to the release of Kamal Haasan's 'Unnaipol Oruvan' is slated for further hearing today.
On Monday, the Court ordered status quo on the release of the movie. While admitting a civil money recovery suit filed by Pyramid Saimira Production International Ltd., Justice K Rajsuria also directed Kamal Haasan and the producers of the film Raaj Kamal Films International to file their counter.
He posted the case to September 16 (today) for further hearing. The film is scheduled for release on September 18 (Friday).
In its petition, Pyramid Saimira Productions, represented by its Managing Director Narayan, submitted that Kamal Haasan and Raaj Kamal Films International, represented by its director and Kamal Haasan's brother Charu Haasan, have been asked to repay a sum of Rs 10.9 crore to the former. Already a legal notice was sent to them in this connection, the petitioner contended.
The petitioner further submitted that Kamal Haasan and Charu Haasan, had entered into an MoU with Pyramid in April 2008 for a joint venture project feature film `Marmayogi in Tamil and Hindi at an estimated budget of Rs 100 crore.
Kamal had assured his full call sheet for the joint venture project and that he would not do anyother films till the production of `Marmayogi was completed. Kamal had received, in all, Rs 10.90 crore, the petitioner submitted.
Kamal and Charu Haasan did not evince any interest in the project subsequently, he submitted. By a letter dated February 3, 2009, Kamal had expressed offered to refund the amount received from Pyramid. But till date, the amount of Rs 10.9 crore had not been settled.
On the other hand "the two had diverted the funds and concentrated on producing the film `Unnaipol Oruvan". The petitioner sought to restrain Kamal Haasan and his film company to release the film on September 18.
