Kamal Haasan's controversial "Vasoolraja MBBS" has finally been cleared for screening after the Madras High Court gave a clean chit to the title saying it does not suggest that all physicians have political nexus.
The judgement has come as a victory for Kamal Hassan, who had trouble with the title of his last movie too. He had to change the title then from "Sandiyar" to "Veerumandi".
Dismissing a petition Friday by the Tamil Nadu Medical Council to direct the censor board to prevent the screening of the film, judge A.K. Rajan ruled that the title did not suggest that all physicians were corrupt or criminals.
The title could suggest, at the most, the case of one individual, said Rajan.
"Vasoolraja MBBS" is the Tamil version of the successful Bollywood production Sanjay Dutt-starrer "Munnabha MBBS".
The Tamil film, starring Kamal Haasan, is due for release this month.
The medical council had moved the court saying the title "Vasoolraja" (or king of extortion) defames the medical profession.
The film depicts a doctor, who is also the election agent of a political party.
The judge ruled the court could interfere only if it reached the conclusion that the title itself was defamatory.
He made it clear that it was for the censor board to clear the film for public viewing.
