Last week's prediction of 'Ghanchakkar' came true on two counts. First and foremost, it opened much better in multiplexes when compared to single screens. Secondly, the average footfalls for this widely released film were in 40%-50% range. However, it was also predicted that the film would see some good rise in collections over the weekend.
Well, as it happened, this didnt quite turn out to be the case as the film managed to stay on just about stable and couldn't really see much escalation. As a result, the weekend collections were around 22 crores which, if not excellent, are decent for sure.
In fact if one looks at the kind of average to above average reviews that the film managed to get at large, and had a similar response from audience as well, this Rajkumar Gupta directed film still managed to have its head above water for a major part of the weekend. Also, these collections are much better than what Emraan Hashmi's last film 'Ek Thi Daayan' (around 18 crores) had managed to garner in its opening weekend.
As for the film to sustain and come up trumps, a lot would depend on the weekday collections. Though there isn't much single screen audience for the film, even at multiplexes this UTV production should primarily find footfalls at premium centred in major cities.
A sophisticated comedy with no song-n-dance routine, this experimental comedy-thriller should eventually turn out to be an average affair at the box office.
The film has managed to lend further credibility to Emraan Hashmi though. For someone who has been experimenting with films, despite finding a place amongst the masses, it is good to see him trying out the likes of 'Shanghai' and now 'Ghanchakkar'. As for the masses, there is 'Ungli' following next which should keep his steady fan base happy.
