The prediction pretty much come true to the T as 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' embarked on a winning start from the word Go. It was always on the cards that the film would open huge and once the film took an opening in the range of 60%-70% with premium multiplexes in upwards of 80% (which was predicted in this column), it was a given that there won't be any stopping this Karan Johar produced affair.
Of course one wondered of 51 crores opening weekend of 'Race 2' was well within the reach but that was unfounded too, what with the collections hitting the roof over the weekend.
As a result, to begin with as good as around 19 crores came in on Friday. Later, with Saturday and Sunday turning out to be bumper as well, the weekend closed at a very healthy total of over 60 crores. Now these are mind boggling collections by a good distance and beyond the huge expectations that one had from this Ayan Mukerji directed film.
With word of mouth ranging from above average to very good, the job is done for the film because for a film of such scale and release, such feedback is good enough to ensure a 100 crore result for the film.
With a century pretty much round the corner and much more expected in days to come, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone have a lot to cheer about. For Ranbir, this is a great response for an out and out commercial film with naach-gaana routine, which should make him inch closer into the Top-5 zone.
On the other hand Deepika Padukone has now delivered three back to back successes with 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani', 'Race 2' and 'Cocktail'. With 'Chennai Express' all set to see a huge beginning for itself, she has further consolidated her place as the most saleable young star actress around.
