Vetrimaaran Vs Powerstar

"Desiya Nedunjalai" was the title Vetrimaaran wanted for his new film with Siddharth. Not so fast! Powerstar Srinivasan wants it too. The title seems to have been bought by the Powerstar already.
"Im acting in a film, titled Desiya Nedunjalai, with Sanghavi. The shooting is complete, and were also done with filming the six songs in the film. The film will release soon. So, I am not in a position to part with the title." tweeted Powerstar Srinivasan. Director Vetrimaaran's responding tweet was, "Udhayam NH4 is a compromised title for Desiya Nedunjalai due to inept rules governing the title ownership of our film industry. I shot for the film Desiya Nedunjalai with Dhanush way back in 2006 for a day but was shelved. And when want to do it I realize the title has been registered by Dr. Srinivasan for a film. This is no less than intellectual property theft."
"Kasturi Raja had registered the title (Desiya Nedunjalai) for a film that I was doing with Dhanush. But the film was stalled later. When we went to re-register the title, we found out that Dr Srinivasan had already registered it under his name. I think the fault is with the system. The registration for a title is valid for a year, and after the due period, the council and the guild, with which titles are usually registered, must check with the producer and director if they have plans of renewing it. They must also intimate the person concerned if a second party is trying to get the same title registered at that time. Its the director and the script writer who come up with title ideas while working on the script. They must be allowed to register the title with the directors union, and later, transfer the ownership to the producer once the film gets rolling. A producer might or might not want to retain the rights to a title. But I believe that the director, whose brainchild the title is, must be given the opportunity to retain his title. Only he knows if he will be using the title or not. There have been so many cases where more than one person has claimed rights over a title. A proper management system must be put in place to avoid such hassles, said Vertimaaran when quizzed about this issue.
