The alleged blow hot relationship between Dhanush and Simbu is not unknown to many in Andhra Pradesh. For years now, the media have written a number of stories on their rivalry. After Dhanush's Kolaveri Di became an anthem overnight, Simbu was said to be green with envy. He roped in Shakira to sing in Podaa Podi, presumably in his enthusiasm to come up with a sensation bigger than Kolaveri Di.

Circa June 2012, the two contemporaries presented a picture of camaraderie at the just-concluded South Indian International Movie Awards, held in Dubai. Dhanush heartily welcomed Simbu on the dais, and they both sang Kolaveri Di in a friendly spirit.

Speaking to a national daily after the event, Dhanush described their relationship as a "weird friendship," even as some of them asked, what did all the banter and sarcastic rebuttals on social networking space, interviews, et al, mean?
