Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi is a romantic comedy featuring Siddharth and Amala Paul. It is directed by short filmmaker Balaji Mohan. Produced by Siddharth, Nirav Shah and Y Not Studios, KSY is quite a smart move by both the parties. Let us first look into that.

Considering the lead actor and cinematographer won’t be taking any paychecks (from themselves, that is), KSY is understandably made with a very small budget. It is also said that the entire budget of the movie has been recovered by selling the television rights. So, each and every penny the movie makes through theaters will be a profit. A new director, a reasonably fresh face in Amala Paul, very simple and straightforward locations throughout the film and few other familiar names in the cast, all make KSY even more of a smaller movie. The fact that it is releasing in both Tamil and Telugu (as Love Failure) gives the production team even more credit.

Now, let us get into the part of the review that actually matters. The film is really, really enjoyable! I mean, some of us would have actually seen the original short film (which has the same title) and loved several parts of it. Fortunately, director Balaji has re-created the magic in almost every scene, despite sticking with some of the same dialogues. He should be given a ton of credit for carrying out things without any “added masala” to it. His dialogues, the way he has laid out the screenplay, and the way the humor is carried out through the scenes is amazing.

The story is amazingly simple and subtle, which might be one of the reasons it will be enjoyed by a lot of people. For those of you in college (or young enough to think of college and smile), KSY is quite a treat. In all fairness, this not merely your everyday love story. It connects with the audience in several levels and almost reminds everyone of something from their past.

It should however, be noted that this is not the first time a screenplay has been shaped this way. Balaji’s script is reminiscent of Woody Allen movies, and more commonly in pictures like Kal Ho Na Ho, where in the characters speak to the camera as if they are being interviewed. Few might find this a bit annoying and will want to criticize Balaji for not being able to come up with more straightforward third party dialogues, but remember, this guy has just made his first feature film. The chances are he is going to improve on it.

Coming to the performances, Siddharth has lived the role having as much fun as he would have had during his college. He looks totally cool and young (despite being not so young for real) in all of the scenes. His character does show off some pompousness and he delivers some weird dialogues at times, but it is enough to make him sound too cheesy. We can be sure that the girls are going to fall in love with him all over again. Talk about getting all kinds of returns from one movie!

Next, there is the pretty and cute Amala Paul playing Parvati, who will probably get more wanna-be directors interested in casting her in their first movie. She has certainly managed to get her dialogues in place for this one. At some points in the movie, you can actually feel how she drives Arun crazy as if it’s happening to you. For me, this will be the success for both her and another chance to give out kudos to Balaji.

The rest of the cast is fairly new but my, do they make the movie refreshing. Everything about them in the movie is casual and natural. Although Balaji has not given in a lot of detail to their characters, they play their parts well. They also add more value to the movie, which is by the way going up with every line I write.

Nirav Shah, producer and cinematographer, is at his usual best. I feel that it is important to underline his impact here. For one, the movie is not shot in a super college set where everyone on screen is a junior artist, and two, this is not the first college romance we have seen. But thanks to Mr.Shah, we do feel both of these to be true to a certain extent.

Thaman’s music is not great but the video songs are fairly bearable. Few of them are quite good too, but, when opposed to the rest of the production, I would say this is a bit of a letdown. It will not ruin your experience, though.

To sum it up, KSY is a very enjoyable movie with a straightforward storyline. Balaji Mohan impresses with his first movie. Siddharth, Amala Paul and the cast make everything look so natural that you think back about college and feel nostalgic.

Verdict – Think twice before you laugh too much. This might just be your love story!
