Its commercial success was below average, but Gangaputrulu is making itself proud in the festival circuit. The film told the heart-rending story of fishermen, whose livelihood has been threatened by corporates and commercialization of the coastal line. Directed by P Sunil Kumar Reddy, the film has been selected for the 4th edition of the Bangalore Film Festival, which is sponsored by the Government of Karnataka. It is one of the 179 films to be screened at the festival.
It is a big honor to the film because it is not easy for a film made on a shoestring budget to make to a festival where films from more than 40 countries will be screened. Gangaputrulu was in the past screened at the Riverside International Film Festival and the Mumbai International Film Festival.
Coming to the Bangalore festival, films like The Battle of Algiers, Z, The Whistleblower, Air India 182 and many others will be screened. As many as nine political cinemas have been lined up for the event. Retrospective cinema is also a new category of films being explored as a part of the film festival.
The film, which sadly disappeared without a trace, starred many familiar faces such as Subbu Raju, Rao Ramesh, LB Sriram, Jiva, Kallu Chidambaram and Rallapalli.
