This is a Diwali which has no Rajini or Kamal, Vijay or Ajith, Vikram or Suriya film to light up the theatres. Yet this yearÂs festival has managed a mixture of quality releases. You canÂt grade this year Diwali releases as a big film or a small film. Size doesnÂt really matter this Diwali as all the so called small films have hogged the limelight usually given for the so called big films.
There will be five Tamil films releasing for 2010 Diwali. Uthamaputhiran, Mynaa, Va Quarter Cutting, Vallakottai and Chithirapoove.
ÂUthamaputhiran is the only star value film this season, This Dhanush-Genelia starrer is a remake of the super hit Telugu film ÂReadyÂ. Dhanush replaces Ram and Genelia D'Souza repeats her role in Tamil also. Other important actors in the film include K. Bhagyaraj, Aashish Vidhyarthi, Vivek, Mayilsamy, R. Sundarrajan and Jayaprakash.
This is an action comedy without violence for the family. Mithran R. Jawar of Yaaradi Nee Mohini and Kutty has directed Dhanush in this yet another remake.
ÂMynaa is a film that started on a low profile and grew up to be a most wanted film. It has a powerful story with a stunning climax. It is a realistic story of love that blooms between two tribal youngsters. Vidharth from ÂKoothu Pattarai as Suruli and Amala Paul aka Anaka of ÂSindhu Samaveli as Mynaa have lived their characters. Director Prabhu Solomon who is known by his off-beat films like ÂKokkiÂ, ÂLee and ÂLaadam has done a marvelous job in this film of the soil. ImmanÂs music is another feather in the cap of Mynaa.
ÂVa-Quarter Cutting is a night life comedy with a difference. Shiva and SPB Charan who are desperate to taste liquor before going to Saudi Arabia spend all night in search of that experience. The whole story happens from 6pm to 6am and the film has its share of comedy and romance within that 12 hours. Lekha Washington is the female quotient.
The spirited team of Pushkar and Gayathri, GV Prakash and Nirav Shah are also waiting to share the laurels of this film.
ÂVallakkottai is an out and out commercial film from director A Venkatesh. Arjun and Haripriya are the main leads in this masala pot boiler which is a remake of the Malayalam Mammootty movie ÂMaayaviÂ. Vincent Asokan and Ashish Vidyarthi are the baddies. Action has always been the forte of this actor-director combo and Vallakottai is to satisfy action lovers.
Braving the above films will be ÂChithirapooveÂ. This budget movie has not been given any prime theatre but will record its release. Chithira Poove is about female infanticide, which is prevalent in some dry lands of Tamil Nadu.
It has Sandeep, Thamarai, Vagai Chandrasekar, Sabitha Anand and Singamuthu in the cast. Debutante director Ra. Kalaimurugan has also scored the music for this film.
