Announcing this at a press meet was the actor, who said his 250 students had been asked to do a script on the title of Chennai. After a rigorous filtering process, 30 of these film scripts will be shortlisted, and they will be filmed by popular and new directors. Kamal Haasan announced that he would also be directing one such film, apart from others including Rakesh Omprakash Mehra and Rituparno Ghosh.

Actor Kamal Haasan, along with Hariharan, director of LV Prasad Film and TV Academy, apart from Oscar winning French screenwriter, director and novelist Jean Claude Carriere met the press and spoke about the proposal. “India has a very rich culture and tradition, which has not lost itself to modernization. Filmmakers have a lot to get inspired by, and this film will be reflective of our mindsets in the period that we live in, making it invaluable in the years to come,” said the filmmaker.

“This is not just a commercial venture, and we are happy at finding a place for ourselves in history,” said Kamal Haasan himself. His screenwriting workshop, which was earlier held in IIT Madras, will next be conducted in Tiruvananthapuram, ahead of the Kerala Film Festival.
