The man who defined what comedy is in Tamil Cinema proved to be not just a comic but a master deliverer of social messages. NSK was given the title 'Kalaivanar' as a testimony to his never-ending passion to the arts. If there was a stage, he would want to perform .and perform he did with complete indulgence and the end result was roaring laughter and boisterous applause.
What was it that set this man apart from the rest? How could he relate to audiences at will?
Firstly, he wrote all the sequences he appeared in himself. Secondly, he had a thorough knowledge of the plight the common man had to endure and the bureaucracy that weighed him down. Often times when entertainers speak lengthy dialogues in films against atrocities the message gets diluted with the fiery element. Taking note of this, NSK developed a tenacity to present these atrocities with a touch of original situational and dialogue oriented comedy. This way the message reached the masses and yet there was pleasantness in the air.
NSK's association with his wife Mathuram in films has gone on to be legendary. The pair was so successful that they had to feature in almost all films to ensure success.
NSK joined a drama troupe in the year 1925 when he was seventeen years old. The boy had such a sense of humor that he was noticed rather immediately. It would take a few more decades for cinema to become popular and when this medium engulfed the interests of the general masses, it was only natural for NSK to take to cinema as a duck would take to water.
Men may come and men may go but comedy in cinema would live as long as the medium itself does. NSK even after his demise in the year 1957 is still remembered for his incredible talent.
Indiaglitz presents to you excerpts from the film 'Madurai Veeran' where Kalaivanar NSK dazzles the screen. Sit back and enjoy the talent of this comic genius.
