It was his role as a police officer that made him a Malayalam film superstar, 25 years back. And now after another eventful twenty-five years Mammootty is still there donning another cop in uniform in the new film Shouryam. This is the actors 25th police character in the career, which made him the best in the role.

Mammootty, who has a phenomenal year so far, celebrated his 54th birthday in the sets of Shouryam directed by Renji Panikkar. The actor who was born on September 7, 1953 as Muhammed Kutty at Chempu in Kottayam district of Kerala is a recipient of an incredible three National film awards for Best Actor, six State awards and six Filmfare awards in the best actor category.

Making his first screen appearance in Anubhavangal Paalichakal in 1971 as a junior artist, his first film as an actor, Devalokam (World of Gods), was not released in theatres. Two people who played a major role in shaping his career were M. T. Vasudevan Nair and K. G. George., of whom the later offered him the first role as a police officer in Yavanika which shooted him to the heights of superstardom. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1998. Along with Malayalam movies, Mammootty also created hits in Tamil, and Telugu and acted in a few Hindi films. Having completed 300 films as a hero, Mammootty still is the super hero in Malayalam who is equally entertained in realistic roles.

The year 2007 was another eventful year for the actor, who had a big hit in Mayavi. Thereafter he was excellent in every films of the year even though Big B was only other hit. The other films of the year Mission 90 Days and Ore Kadal turned out to make dismal collections in box office even though the actor's part was much appreciated. In fact his performance in Ore Kadal which was his recent Onam release is rated as one of the best from the Mammootty.

He has just completed Nasrani another sure shot hit with Joshy , which will hit the theatres this Ramzan. One of the sure winners that Mammootty has in his pockets right now is the film based on the life of Pazhassi Raja, directed by Hariharan in the scripts of M T Vasudevan Nair, which is expected to the biggest budgeted movie in Malayalam.
