State Awards comes as a surprise for many while for others it was a rude shock. The main point of debate was the selection of the best actor and best actress categories. In the major speculations on the awards that came in the media, days before, both Prithviraj and Urvashi were never supposed to be in the race for awards.

Many of the film buffs expected Mammootty and Padmapriya to share the honors. Mammootty with three offbeat types of films in a row were expected to become a winner. The grape wine says that a lot of debates were in the award committee before forwarding these decisions.
