In his hey days he was known to be a director with heart, making films that were high in sense and sensitivity.
But he is now a man with a troubled heart. Having suffered a debilitating stroke, he was on the verge of quitting it all.
But strong will and stronger passion for the art of cinema has ensured that Balu Mahendra is back to doing what he loves the most --- make films.
He is busy directing Dhanush for a movie titled Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam in the beautiful locales of Ooty. He knows that it has been a close shave for him.
"I thank Almighty for being back to complete my venture. The movie revolves around a youth (played by Dhanush) and about the sacrifices of a father in bringing up his son, who goes on to make it big in his life. In between, the boy falls in love with a girl next door," he says with obvious relish.
A true taskmaster, Balu Mahendra is impressed with the dedication shown by Dhanush.
"He is a dedicated actor, who gives his best on every scene. He shows great interest towards the nuances of film-making and I am sure he would go a long way in his career. He grasps things fast and does reproduce them well. I hope this boy will successfully direct a movie in the future.
The movie has Balu's favorite Ilayaraja rendering soul-stirring melodies. Actress Priya Mani is cast opposite Dhanush in the movie.
About his son Shanki Mahendra's work behind the camera in Cheran's Autograph, Balu Mahendra as a proud father says, "he has done a good job and I wish to see much more from him".
But hardcore film fans are hoping to see much more from Balu Mahendra himself
