All three accused involved in the suicide of Dr Payal Tadvi have been arrested. Ankita Khandelwal, Hema Ahuja and Bhakti Mehre, fellow student doctors at BYL Nair Hospital, were accused of harassing the second year MD Gynaecology student by using casteist slurs against her. Bhakti Mehere was arrested on Tuesday afternoon when she reached the court to file for bail. She had come in a burka to avoid arrest. Next, Hema Ahuja was caught at the Andheri station area when she had gone to meet someone early on Wednesday morning. Finally, Ankita Khandelwal was arrested later the same day. Payal’s mother Abeda Salim Tadvi said: “Payal used to tell me about the torture which she was facing by her seniors on petty issues. They threw files on her face in front of patients.”
The anticipatory bail application the three applied for is likely to come for hearing today. A senior official from the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors has said: “We have credible inputs that the three doctors made casteist remarks against Dr Payal Tadvi, who allegedly committed suicide. We will cooperate with the police for the further investigation.” A case has been filed under Atrocities Act, Anti-Ragging Act, Information Technology Act and under Section 306 for abetment to suicide. The doctors who have been suspended sought a fair probe. In a letter written by them, they mentioned: "This is not the way to do an investigation through the police force and media pressure, without hearing our side."
