2009 was an eventful year for Mollywood cinema. With 78 films getting released (including dubbed movies), the year saw a ten percent of them being converted into hits while another ten managed to earn safely. The biggest hits of the year was undoubtedly Mammootty's ‘Pazhassi Raja’ which had already broken many collection records. The other movies which are sure to end up as hits include 2 Harihar Nagar, Puthiya Mukham, Bhagyadevatha, Passenger, Ivar Vivahitharayal, Chattambinaadu, and Duplicate.

While movies like 'Makante Achan, Rithu, Bhramaram, Saagar Elias Jackey, Oru Black And White Kudumbam, Robinhood, Gulumaal, Neelathamara and Loudspeaker will end up as safe earners, movies like Kutty Sharanku, Oru Pennum Randaanum, Madhya Venal, Palery Manickyam-Oru Pathirakolapathakinte Katha, Rithu, Ramanam, Raman, Vilapangalkappuram, Bhoomi Malayalam, Dalamaramarangal, Orkuka Vallapozhum, Manjadikuru, and Kerala Cafe were noted for its different narratives in the desi and international film circuits.
