Karutha Pakshigal starring Mammootty released last week.

Director Kamal says, "Malayalam cinema has always been based on certain values and culture. There are a sizeable number of viewers who want to see serious films. In the present situation, many of them have distanced themselves from the cinema theatres. My films like Karutha Pakshikal are intended to bring them back to the theatres."

On commercial success, Kamal who saw big hits like Swapnakoodu and Nammal, says, "Everyone would like their movies to succeed. But when I make a film, I approach it in a truthful manner. We have to do justice to our work."

Dwelling on Karutha Pakshigal, he says, "When Mammootty and I decided to do a movie together I asked him about the kind of characters he likes to portray. He told me he liked down-to-earth characters. I told him the story of a Tamil migrant laborer. He was very enthused when he heard the story."
