The month of May for Kannada cinema industry has once again caused worry as none of the films released clicked in the box office. Aptha Rakshaka of Dr Vishnuvaradhan reached the 100 days and it was an expected achievement of the 200th film of recently demised superstar.
As many as 10 Kannada films were released in the month of May making it to 65 films so far this year but only Shankar IPS showed good signs in the box office. But after a week of screening Shankar IPS got in to legal battle as the judiciary was labeled as Dallaligalu (middlemen) in the film.
The highly expected films Naanu Nanna Kanasu of Prakash Rajs debut direction in Kannada got rave reviews but it did not give the expected results in the box office. Nagathihalli Chandrasekhar Nooru Janmaku starring Santosh and Aindrita Ray crashed miserably.
The other films Bombaat Car, Tharangini, Preethiyinda Ramesh, Kiladi Krishna, Nannavanu, Abhirami Anathana, Khadak faced disaster in the box office.
The month is notable for the touching May Day celebration by Karnataka Cinema Workers Federation in which four veterans Rathnakar, Akki Channabasappa, Sowbhagyamma, Shanimahadevappa plus two veteran journalists were honored.
This is the month the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce saw the emergence of new President Basanthkumar Patil. The outgoing President Dr Jayamala in her get together party felt happy for 75 years of Kannada cinema Amrutha Mahotsava taking place in her regime. Dr Jayamalas daughter Soundarya made her debut in Telugu film Mr Premikudu that stars Yashosagar of Ullasanga Utsahanga fame.
The Innovative Film Awards, Suvarana film Awards, Karnataka state film awards took place in this month. Dr Manoj Kumar the doyen of Hindi cinema was felicitated in Bangalore by Madhur Sangeeth, Malayalam superstar on his debut Kannada film Shikari addressed the media in Bangalore.
Among disturbances, Hindi film of Hrithik Roshan Kites showing in excess of screens in Karnataka was decried and one day the film was not shown in Karnataka. Veteran actor Srinivasamurthy faced strictures from court for 20 years old case; Kannada film directors association attacked the double standard attitude of director TS Nagabharana who is also President of Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy.
