Remaking other language hit films in Kannada was an in thing of 2009. Of the over 120 films released last year a generous 25 per cent were remakes. But that did not guarantee success at the box office. ‘Savaari, Yee Shathamanadha Veera Madhakari, Jaajie Mallige’ were the only remade winners at the box office. Above that Malashri double role in ‘Kannadadha Kiran Bedi’ was similar to Sudeep double role in ‘Yee Shathamanadha Veera Madhakari’ which was remake of Telugu ‘Vikramarkudu’.

The other remakes which failed at the box office include Anu, Jolly Days, Thabbali, Rajakumari, Anjadhiru, Gautham, Chickpete Sachagalu, Dubai Babu, Rajani, Yodha, Challidharo Sampigeya, Vaayuputra, Devru, Salute (Partial), Ballari Naga, Gilli, Ravana and Mr Painter.

One reason pointed out to this remaking spree is the Karnataka government’s 100 percent Entertainment Exemption being extended to even remakes. With fiscal advantage already in place the remake trend is expected to continue even in 2010.
