Kristen Connolly wasn't kidding. When the actress spoke to Hollywood.com last week about the genre-bending horror flick The Cabin in the Woods she shared that audiences were having some strong reactions. ""You see the same expression on people's faces when they come out [of the theater] and they're like, 'Whoa! That's was crazy!'"" And for anyone that went to see Drew Goddard's wild Cabin this weekend (and from the box office returns, it seems a good amount of you did as the movie earned a respectable $14.85 million for its debut) they undoubtedly experienced some audience reactions that were as unexpected as the film's big final act twist.

Having already been lucky enough to see Cabin before it hit theaters, I went back for more on Friday night. Not only because I'd enjoyed the movie so much and wanted to experience the fun all over again, but because I couldn't wait to see which scenes and revelations would make my friends (and our fellow audience members) laugh, scream, and drop their jaws. Already a Joss Whedon fan myself, during my first Cabin viewing I was giggling from the ingeniously over-the-top opening credits and judging by the snickers and laughs coming from the East Village, NYC, theater I revisited the movie on this past Friday night, they were in on Whedon's humor from the beginning, too.

Of course, even those familiar with Whedon's style could have never predicted those crazy third act twists. (ONCE AGAIN: HUGE, MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD. DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT YET SEEN THE CABIN IN THE WOODS. SERIOUSLY THOUGH, WHY HAVEN'T YOU SEEN THE CABIN IN THE WOODS?) The audience I watched with screamed in unison when Holden (Jesse Williams) met his untimely end in the RV; cheered with delight as Marty (crowd-pleaser Fran Kranz) rose from the seemingly dead to save our dear heroine Dana (Connolly) from a horrific mutant zombie; and laughed out loud (some while watching through their fingers) as all those nightmarish creatures from the underworld wreaked havoc on those ""controlling"" the madness.

Still, the biggest reactions came from two of the most satisfying scenes of the film's last few minutes: Hadley (a particularly great Bradley Whitford) finally getting to see a merman, albeit under some terrible circumstances, and the super secret cameo reveal of the one and only Sigourney Weaver having fun with her reign as a Scream Queen. Both moments earned solid cheers from the giddy (and presumably spoiler-free) Manhattan audience, as did the film itself when the end credits began to roll. It was the most fun I've had in a theater since 2009's Zombieland and like a roller coaster, it was just as thrilling, if not more so, the second time around.
