The Supreme Court has sentenced Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt to five years in jail for getting guns from gangsters involved in the 1993 bombings in Mumbai. The B-town Munnabhai has being found guilty of acquiring illegal weapons from those blamed for the bombings in Mumbai that killed 257 people.
The 50+ actor was cleared of conspiracy charges in the Mumbai serial blasts but was found guilty of illegal possession of an automatic rifle and a pistol. The 1993 Mumbai attacks were ordered by India's most wanted man Dawood Ibrahim
Sanjay Dutt has already served 18 months of his term in prison, has four weeks to surrender. Anyways Sanjay Dutt can file a review petition. The court said there is no case for probation to Dutt because of the gravity of the crime.
Sanjay Dutt was convicted under the Arms Act for illegally possessing weapons, had been awarded six years imprisonment by the TADA (Terrorists and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act) court in 2007.
The reduce sentence from six to five years means Sanjay Dutt who has already undergone 18 months imprisonment will now have to complete the remaining three and half years if the appeal gets rejected.
The prime accused Yakub Memon's death sentence is withheld by the Supreme court while the punishment of 10 other accused is reduced to life imprisonment from death sentence.
