Produced by Yash Raj Films ‘Jab Tak Hai Jan’ (JTHJ) is directed by late Yash Chopra with Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma in the lead. A lot has been talked about this film in last few months and the loss of Yash Chopra only added to the expectations. It’s an important movie for SRK too as he is testing his romantic act again after a long gap. Music by AR Rahman has already become a rage (especially Challa, Jiya Re and Saans). With such expectations, does the film really hold its fort?

The movie starts off by showing unshaved Samar Anand (Shah Rukh Khan) as a major serving for the Indian Army in the bomb Squad. He is known to be a person who does not fear death and hence does not wear any protective gear while diffusing bombs. His tragic looks tell you that he has a flashback. To reveal the flashback, enters the character of Akira Raj (Anushka Sharma as a documentary student) who finds his dairy and takes us through the same…..same story which we would have seen in most romantic films shot in foreign countries.

Samar Anand is younger and does all types of errand jobs to earn a leaving (also by singing Challa song on the streets of London). He meets Meera (Katrina Kaif) and falls in love with her at first sight. Meera is a character who believes in following the promises you make to God. And like you guessed, her engagement is already fixed and she is about to tie knot to a foreigner as per the wish of her father. Later, they fall in love but unfortunately Samar meets with an accident and in that moment, she prays to God for his life in return of their love. Samar recovers but then Meera tries to keep the promise and asks him to withdraw from the relationship. Akira Raj becomes interested in the story of Samar and tries to follow him in the name of making a documentary. Eventually, she falls in love with him. To complete her documentary she asks Samar to travel to London for a day, which results in some drastic chain of events and keeps you wondering whom will Samar marry till the end.

The first half is predictable and there is nothing much to expect but it’s the second half, where Yash Chopra takes control of the proceedings and takes the story through some interesting incidents and keeps you engaged. The film drags in the second half towards the end; it needs some immediate trimming to make it more entertaining. SRK does a neat job and thank God, he was not shown stammering. He shows the right emotions and does not overdo things here. Katrina and Anushka have meaty roles each and support the proceedings well. AR Rahman’s songs gel well with the film especially “Saans” and “Jiya Re” and the background score adds magic to the proceedings. Cinematography (Anil Mehta) is excellent and captures the beauty of Ladakh and Kashmir.

On the negative side…. I can’t understand why our actors refuse to take some effort in showing them in sync with the character they play. I have not seen an unshaved army major with long hair in my life. Major Samar Anand and his team is shown travelling everywhere with their own tents and cooking vessels…for what reason??? The Indian Army is never bothered to know what happened to their Major who went to London. There is a sequence where Akira Raj tries to propose to Samar Anand while he is diffusing a bomb. If such scenes were avoided or corrected, the film could have been a classic.

Nevertheless, ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ will be remembered as the last romantic saga from Yash Chopra and is definitely worth that title. It’s a good watch and if trimmed towards the end, it could be much better.
