How fortunes have changed for Aftab Shivdasani. I distinctly remember how disappointed he was three years back when his 'Acid Factory' had released in theatres in a pre-Diwali week.
The trade was going through a low and it was generally felt that the time period was one of the least likely to generate any moolah at the audience. This is what happened when this well made film made under the banner of Sanjay Gupta failed to do anything worthwhile in theatres.
It further strengthened the belief that releasing your film a week or two before Diwali was suicidal.
Not anymore though, if the success of '1920 - Evil Returns' (with Tia Bajpai delivering a fantastic performance) is anything to go by, what with close to 19 crores coming in!
The film opened well, continued to fetch audience over the weekend and then kept the momentum on right through the weekdays as well. This, when the celebrations 'are definitely' on and 'Skyfall' too is finding good footfalls coming it's way. Wait, there is 'Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana' generating some revenue as well.
All in all, a week that resulted in around 50 crores odd coming from ticket sales in a so-called 'lean period'. Another myth broken, and how!
Coming to 'Luv Shuv....', the film, which is actually a barely average product and not half as entertaining as it is being made out to be, crawled towards the 8 crore mark.
While the opening was anyways weak, the weekdays were further low and though they stayed steady on the lower side, it was hardly a matter to rejoice.
Yes, the only solace that Anurag Kashyap and his team can take is from the fact that the film would end up 2-3 crores over their last release 'Aiyyaa' which was a relatively much costlier product and a huge flop at the box office. This one would at least turn out to be a coverage affair.
