There were always apprehensions around 'Mausam' scoring at the box office. The hype was always missing and even till the day of release, there wasn't much hype. All depended upon the eventual content of the film and the film was awaited with bated breath. The question on everyone's lips was - 'In this season of one hit after another, will 'Mausam' score or would it only fall victim to the law of averages?'
Well, unfortunately for Shahid Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor here, it turned out to be the latter scenario with the film failing to kick any storm at the box office. As predicted last week, the film opened around the 60% mark and stayed similar right through it's opening weekend. With just around 21 crore coming in, this big budget film hasn't quite brought smiles on the faces of those who expected a miraculous turnaround.
So what really went wrong? Well, it was the script that played truant here. There was nothing wrong in the packaging, presentation or acting but an all important thread that binds it all together - the narrative - failed to grip the audience. Word of mouth was mostly hovering around the below average mark which was always going to be threatening scenario for the film that had it's chances only if audience as well as reviews were positive about it in unison.
As things stand today, 'Mausam' is facing rough weather at the box office and with close to half a dozen films releasing in the coming weekend, the going won't show signs of much improvement in days to come.
The other release of the week, 'Speedy Singhs', wasn't any better either with collections being much lower than even 'Mausam'. With collections not topping even the 20% mark, this Indo-Canadian dubbed film has proven to be a non-starter at the box office. With the weekend collections in the range of 2 crore, 'Speedy Singhs' can't fathom it's chances at the box office beyond a week. Third release of the week, 'U R My Jaan', didn't even find a proper release and met with a cold response in the limited theatres where it was running. A complete washout.
