He is the director of the biggest film ever made in India. However Anubhav Sinha truly understood the enormity of making 'Ra. 1' only after he spent a couple of days on sets with Shahrukh Khan. No wonder, when realisation actually sunk in that this was one film which had the entire nation interested in it, Anubhav was truly overwhelmed.
"Honestly, during the writing process itself we realised that 'Ra. 1' was going to be one big film, whether in terms of scale, setting, production, presentation or expectations. However while all of this is on paper, you get the actual kick out of it when you start directing the man - Shahrukh Khan. His involvement took the film to an altogether different level," says Anubhav who had pitched the film to Shahrukh way back in 2005.
While Anubhav was glad with the fact that Shahrukh was supporting his vision right through the writing and pre-production, he acknowledges that the true meaning of it all occurred to him once 'Ra. 1' went on floors.
"Let me be honest here, until I took the film on floors I didn't understand the meaning of a Shahrukh film", says Anubhav who has earlier made 'Dus' and 'Tum Bin' amongst others, "However when I started shooting the film, I saw how the whole world was interested in this film. Trust me, it's a pressure of a different kind because suddenly there is this huge Shahrukh Khan factor involved."
Though for Anubhav, his actor-producer was a huge help in decision making, he maintains that any film maker (especially the one who is working with the actor for the first time) would be conscious about the fact that he was working with Shahrukh Khan.
"Unless you work with him, you won't know what I am saying. There is a different meaning to a Shahrukh film; it's an altogether different ballgame," says Anubhav while continuing to be overwhelming about the whole experience, "The enormity and magnitude shift that a film takes is something that can only be experienced."
Well Anubhav, we hope that despite being overwhelmed, you still managed to make what you were set out for.
