'Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji' was always meant to be a word of mouth movie which would open on a slow note and pick up on word of mouth if the film is liked. This was predicted last week and the box office collections were more or less as expected though a massive release meant that the percentage occupancy turned out to be slightly lower with first day collections ranging around 40%-50%.
The film did pick up over the weekend though with word of mouth being pretty decent. Also, the film has been aided by reviews that have hovered around above average to good mark. Amongst the audience, no one disliked the film while youth pretty much patronised it. All of this meant that Saturday and Sunday were better than 'just about okay' Friday, hence resulting in 15 crores coming in after the first weekend. This also means that this Madhur Bhandarkar film has now collected much more than what his biggest film till date, 'Fashion', had collected on its release two years ago.
Arriving in 2008, the first week of 'Fashion' had stood at 18 crores while the overall collections ended at 27 crores. As things stand for 'Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji', this sum should be crossed by the time second weekend is through. Made at a reasonable budget (around 28 crores including print and publicity cost) with around 20 crores coming in from non-theatrical rights (satellite, music, home video etc.) already, the film is a decent success and has the potential to do better if the collections remain steady over the second week as well.
This could be possibility as this Ajay Devgn & Emraan Hashmi starrer has a fortnight open for itself with the next big release being 'Patiala House' (on 11th February). With this light hearted comedy, Madhur Bhandarkar has tasted success again after the commercial disappointment of 'Jail'. Moreover Ajay Devgn too has continued his successful run from last year. As for Emraan Hashmi, he can now leave the disappointment of 'Crook' behind. Incidentally, this is his second multi starrer in quick succession after 'Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai', which was again with Ajay and a huge success.
