Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan is reported to be stable and has been put under observation at the Lilavati Hospital here Tuesday.

Bachchan was brought from New Delhi late Monday after he complained of abdominal pain.

The 63-year-old actor was admitted to the hospital around 10.30 p.m. Monday and has been undergoing several tests, the reports of which are awaited, hospital authorities said.

"He (Bachchan) is resting and is comfortable. We ran a couple of investigative tests and are awaiting the results," Lilavati Hospital vice president Narendra Trivedi told IANS.

Bachchan, who is recuperating in the executive suite on the 11th floor of the hospital, has wife Jaya Bachchan and son Abhishek Bachchan with him.

Bachchan was first taken earlier Monday to the Escorts Hospital in New Delhi. He flew to Mumbai in a chartered Reliance Industries plane accompanied by Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh.

Several dignitaries, including business tycoon Anil Ambani and wife Tina Ambani, received him at the airport.

Bachchan was in Lucknow Sunday for a poetry recital programme organised on the occasion of his father and poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan's birth anniversary.

He then left for Dehradun in Uttaranchal where he experienced pain in his abdomen.

One of the most popular actors of the country and BBC's star of the millennium, Bachchan has an unprecedented fan following not just in India but also in several other countries.
