Six movies, six flops and still, Bollywood can be seen smiling. Reason being that despite a disaster of a film called 'Aiyyaa', a forgettable outing like 'Bhoot Returns' and expected non-starters like 'Chittagong', 'Prem Mayee' and 'In The Name Of Tai', quality cinema continued to be appreciated in the week gone by as well.
When audience has a choice to catch 'OMG! Oh My God', 'English Vinglish' and 'Makkhi' in the same week, one can definitely say that Bollywood is definitely on a high.
Okay, so box office fortunes of these films may have been different but no one can deny the fact that audience was spoilt with some real quality films in the running. However before that a quick take on what really went wrong in the week.
The biggest twist in the tale was that of 'Aiyyaa' which turned out to be the biggest disappointment of the year so far. After a terrible weekend, weekdays were further pathetic as the film folded up at just over 6 crores mark.
The way film is going, there are all the chances of this Anurag Kashyap film folding under the 8 crore mark, hence earning itself a 'disaster' status.
'Bhoot Returns' has turned out to be a huge flop as well, what with the film not managing even 6 crores in its first week. Amongst all the comebacks this year, this one comes close to Karisma Kapoor's 'Dangerous Ishhq' which had similar collections.
The film which definitely deserved better was 'Makkhi' but just like another dubbed film 'Aparichit', which had released a few years back and had again fetched appreciation but no moolah, this one too couldn't cover much distance. The sad part is that there is a huge inflow of movies in weeks to come, which means this film won't get any opportunity to even breathe.
The ones which are continuing to breathe quite strongly are 'OMG - Oh My God' and 'English Vinglish'. Even without competition, a third week total of near 13 crores would have been respectable for any film.
However for this Umesh Shukla affair to do so well despite competition from 7 other films is no mean feat. The Akshay Kumar production has now earned over 71 crores and while 80 crores is a given, it would be interesting to see how far does this superhit film go from there.
Same holds good for 'English Vinglish' which had a good second week of around 10 crores and has now netted over 30 crores. A clean hit.
