"20 years back, I would have picked SRK for 'Hate Story'" - Vivek

'Hate Story' is a success and Gulshan Devaiah has now graduated to a lead role after being seen in ensemble affairs like 'Dum Maaro Dum', 'Shaitan' and 'That Girl in Yellow Boots'. No wonder, director Vivek Agnihotri is happy that he could bring in this transition for the talented actor.
"I find Gulshan very stylised and also a perfect commercial hero material. I had the role of an antihero and Gulshan just fitted the bill since he has a very unconventional face. In fact I can say that with confidence that if I had to make 'Hate Story' 20 years back, I would have picked up Shahrukh Khan for this role. Such is the kind of charisma that Gulshan also carried since he is an accomplished actor. Now that he too has stepped into a full-on commercial film, it is great for him as well."
Even for Vivek it has been a step into a new world since he hasn't made a revenge drama like 'Hate Story' before. Though he has directed 'Chocolate' and 'Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal' in the past, commercial space like 'Hate Story' with an unabashed holds-no-bar body display in motion is a first for him as well.
"It isn't easy to just go ahead and show lots of skin to make an erotic thriller", says Vivek, "Just one wrong move and within a second it can turn into soft porn. Bollywood has made lots of titillating movies where you have excess of cleavage shows, lip locks, body exposure and all. However this is not what erotica meant to me. I studied a lot of French films to understand this art and get the right aesthetics in place. I didn't want to hold myself back while worrying about what would the society think. That was Censors job and I left it to them. Thankfully the film released exactly how I would have wanted it to."
