Given the fact that 'Hate Story' belongs to the erotica genre, film's male lead Gulshan Devaiah had to contemplate for a while when it take to defining boundaries for himself. Though there was an under current of sex element running in his characterisation for each of the three films done by him in the past, it was holds-no-bar approach in 'Hate Story' that did bring him out of his comfort zone.
"Well, all I can say is that I surprised myself", smiles Gulshan, "When I had started off in this business, I wouldn't have imagined that one day I would be doing a film like 'Hate Story'. However when I met Vivek (Agnihotri) and Vikram (Bhatt), I didn't even blink once before saying 'yes' to it. Usually I take time to go through a script and taking a decision. In case of 'Hate Story', I just went with the flow."
One can also expect the lure of playing a lead part being a decisive factor here.
"I would rather put it this way that I had grown in confidence by now to be able to pull off such a part", he says after a brief pause, "When 'Dum Maaro Dum' released, people appreciated my work even though my role wasn't the kind that tore the roof. However critics were kind enough to write that the small part played by also stood out. When 'Shaitan' came then it was widely viewed which really helped me."
"On the other hand 'That Girl in Yellow Boots' was an altogether contrasting film that was noticed. When you are acknowledged for what you have done, you do feel that you are doing something right. It was this confidence that helped me take the decision and finalise 'Hate Story'", he concludes.
With Paoli Dam in the lead, 'Hate Story' releases all over next Friday.
