‘Cricket bigger then films’ says B-town top producer

While team India is all set and ready to ‘pak’ Pakistan out from world cup, the B-town entertainment industry has joined in to cheer.

Having nothing much to do, our star reporter thought of paying a visit to a top producer for an exclusive interview. But surprisingly the producer shared some interesting things between Bollywood and Cricket. Excerpts from the interesting conversation -

Producer: We will talk about cricket.

Reporter: “Why should we talk about cricket?”

Producer: “Cricket is a bigger entertainment than films.”

Reporter: “I agree with the World Cup and IPL cricket has grown to be a bigger entertainment than cinema, but it does not mean we have to discuss cricket.”

Producer: “Well, there is a lot common between cricket and films.”

Reporter: “What is common between cricket and films? A film is a drama on celluloid. Cricket is a game with a bat and ball played in a circular ground.”

Producer: “The first thing common between cricket and films is that both have their heroes. Audiences go to watch films to see heroes like Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan in action. They go to the cricket ground or sit before the TV to see Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh in action.”

Reporter: “You have a point.”

Producer: “You know a film is made on a script and there is scripting of a cricket match as well.”

Reporter: “Scripting of a cricket match! What are you talking?”

Producer: “Yeah there is scripting of a cricket match also. The difference is, in the case of a film, the writer writes a script and the director executes it with the help of actors. In the case of a cricket match, the captain and the coach of both the teams write their own scripts. Along with the confrontation between the players there is also the confrontation between the scripts. The team with the winning script turns out to be the winner.”

Reporter: “You have a point.”

Producer: Take yesterday’s quarter final, there where twists and turns like Ashwin bowling out Shane Watson in the 10th over. Sachin being dismissed in a controversial decision, then Lee and Tait being hammered by Yuvraj and Raina.”

Reporter: “There is comedy also like the running out of Gambhir.”

Producer: “Dramatic confrontations happen in cricket also like it happens in films. In films, there are Amitabh Bachchan’s classic confrontations with Dilip Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar, Shashi Kapoor and Amjad Khan. In cricket, there have been classic confrontations between Sachin and Bret Lee and between Ricky Ponting and Harbhajan Singh.”

Reporter: “You have discovered a good angle.”

Producer: “Angle is important in both films and cricket. In cricket, a batsman must know his angles. It all depends on the angle with which he hits the ball. If it is the right angle, he scores a boundary. If he misses the angle he is caught. In the making of a film, a director must know his angles to catch all the beauty, action and drama in a shot.”

Reporter pointed, “In the case of a film, if a director does not know his angle, there is the cameraman to help him. In cricket, a batsman has to know his job perfectly.”

Producer: “I am filmmaker, but I have to say, there is no climax, like the climax of cricket. In films, mostly the audiences know or can guess the climax. In cricket, the suspense is total.”

Reporter: In that sense cricket is more entertaining

Producer: That’s why we are releasing our heroes after the cricketing one are done.
