The mad rush to get to the theatres before ‘Endhiran’ started last week and this Friday too has four straight Tamil films releasing. Two are with famed names and two are from rank new comers. Also there is one real multistarrer Hollywood dubbed film this Friday.

‘Vamsam’ is the biggest film for this Friday. Chennai has been painted ‘Vamsam’ for obvious reasons. ‘Vamsam’ is a large canvas village story about the life and feelings of 11 generations. Set in the backdrop of Pudukottai in Tamil Nadu, ‘Vamsam’ is expected to get a decent initial.

‘Vamsam’ is directed by ‘Pasanga’ Pandiraj and stars Arulnidhi and Sunaina. Arulnidhi is the grand son of chief minister M. Karunanidhi and that adds a lot to the reactions to the film. Also Pandiraj is a respected name after ‘Pasanga’ and he will get some of the serious film watchers.

S3 Films ‘Kadhal Solla Vandhen’ is a breezy romantic entertainer from the director who gave casual hits like Devathaiyai Kanden, Thiruvilayadal Aarambam and Malaikottai. Director Bhoopathy Pandian is back after a brief hiatus and delivered this film with new comers Balaji and Meghna. Bhoopathy Pandian says the film is an intense love story which will also have his own brand of comedy.

Balaji has before starred in the television serial ‘Kana Kaanum Kaalangal’ and was also seen in the film ‘Pattalam’. Meghna is daughter of actress Pramila who paired opposite Vijayakanth in ‘Vaidehi Kathirunthal’.

Since the genre is romance ‘Kadhal Solla Vandhen’ has music by Yuvan Shankar Raja. It has five songs all penned by Na. Muthukumar. Songs are already out and popular.

Anugraha Movies ‘Mandapam’ claims to be a thriller based on real life incidents with many twists in the tale. The film’s hero is a lawyer turned actor ST Thamilarasan. He has done a few small budget movies like ‘Megam’ and ‘Chella Thiruda’ before.

Other stars in the film include ‘Nizhalgal’ Ravi, OAK Sunder, Shanmugasundaram, Ciniya, Rahasiya, Vadivukarasi and others. Jaisingh Raj is the cinematographer and music is done by Iniya Magesh.

R Senthamilarasu has directed this film produced by KA Devasee under the banner Thilaga Arts.

The other small film hitting the theatre is Yamini Creations ‘Androru Naal’. The film is said to be an investigative social drama about eve teasing and after effects. A girl harassed by a group of rouges disappears unable to bear the trauma. Her family is searching for the girl for six years in vain. Then one day the girl’s photo appears in a newspaper and the family again goes looking for the girl this time with the help of the police.

The film claims to discuss a lot of new techniques in crime investigation that were never seen on Tamil cinema. It stars Jai Krishna, Getup Rajendran, Padmakumar, Mythili, Brinda, Riyaz Khan, Babylona and Sri Vrisha and others. ‘Androru Naal’ is directed by VM Arul Murugan and has music by TS Manimaran and Indian.

The major Hollywood dubbed film this week is The Expendables. It is an ensemble action-war film done as a tribute to the blockbuster action thrillers of the 1980s. It is written by Dave Callaham and Sylvester Stallone, and directed by Stallone.

'The Expendables' stars an array of action veterans you have worshipped in the 80s. Stallone himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, and Jet Li play in the film. However the dream team misses some Gods like Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Chuck Norris, Jean Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal.

'The Expendables' is a team of highly-trained mercenaries sent into South America to topple a ruthless dictator. But once they begin their operation they come to know that the assignment given to them is more sinister than they believed. When they realize their actions are going to put innocent lives in danger they embark on to take on even more difficult challenges.

It is surprising this film uses the English name for Tamil version also. When strange titles are created even for ordinary films this multi starrer could have had a Tamil name to attract audiences beyond Chennai.
