The base story of Katha Thudarum is mine and I have no doubts about that, says ace director Sathyan Anthikkad following allegations about story lifting. The director was speaking to the media at the Calicut Pres club, as a part of the promotion of the film. ''Since such an allegation came up, I am planning to read that novel and see whether there is any relation in the themes, which could be coincidental '', added Sathyan.
Some of the critics earlier pointed out the similarity in a few scenes of 'Katha Thudarum'' with the Hollywood flick ''In pursuit of Happiness'' starring Will Smith. The Hollywood movie which told the plight of a male protagonist left out in the streets with his 5 year old son, was inspired from a true life story of a San Fransisco based salesman. The eviction of the lead character and son from the apartments, their finding shelters in the metro station and final rise above obstacles are all the same in both the movies. Added to that base structure Katha Thudarum has that Sathyan seal and packaging with good songs, the placement of the characters in an idealistic village and that little soft satirical lines going all through, which makes the movie memorable.
