A day after the controversy over Aamir Khan quitting a panel set up by the Union human resources development ministry to suggest changes in the Copyright Act, HRD minister Kapil Sibal stepped in and asked the actor to stay on.
Javed Akhtar said he would be happy if Khan returned to the panel. "There is no need to stretch the issue," he said. "I have written a letter where I have said that if he returns to the panel, then I would feel happy."
Sibal said he had spoken to Khan about the letter of the members. "I have told Aamir that they are not questioning your integrity and you should withdraw your resignation," he said. "Aamir said he will consider it."
We ask what will be reconsidered, the issue was of the copyright act where the government is taking a good stand and wants to give some share to the lyricists who have written the song.
At present in India, IPRS (Indian Performing Right Society) follows the system prevalent outside India where royalty of every song is shared between the music director, singer and lyricist. No share is given to the producer as they own the film not the song. Theres no law as such in India right now which values the contribution of the writers of the song but in west the lyricist get their royalties as it is in their copyright laws. The present Indian copyright law only favours the music companies and its a commendable gesture by the government which is interested in giving share to the writer also as its the practice everywhere.
What we mean to say is instead of talking about the issue both Aamir and Javed Akhtar took this personally.
Aamirs argument on his integrity getting questioned is idiotic but more shameful was the way certain section of the media diverted the issue and some started taking side of Aamir and some started taking side of Javed Akhtar.
Ignorance on the part of some reputed media organization is more shocking then the lack of understanding between Indian producers which also include producers like Aamir and writers which also includes poets like Javed Akhtar.
Nobody bothered to throw light on the issue forget about the honest opinion on the spat where both Aamir and Javed Akhtar are equally responsible for their egoistic comments.
Chetan Bhagat should not be dragged in this but Javed Akhtar did, stardom had nothing to do with this but Aamir being an actor also tossed the star coin which started the whole debate.
The so called educated and media savvy producer like Mahesh Bhatt gives a statement that the lyricist should also bear the losses also if they want a share in copyright.
How baniya (petty traders) thinking is that.
Ironically, the great lyricist late Sahir Ludhyanvi who has written songs in films like Kabhi Kabhi, Taj Mahal, Pyasa to name a few use to charge 1 rupee extra from the amount given to the music director from the producer, perhaps he knew that even after almost 30 years of his death, situations will still remain the same.
