On 28th July 2006, PVR Cinemas, India's largest cinema chain that had significantly altered the multiplex culture launched its second multiplex in the technically snazzier city Gurgaon with 2 screens at Sahara Mall. With the existing 7 screens multiplex at MGF Mall, the launch is yet another achievement in making the total reach of the brand equivalent to 9 screens in the city.
Capturing the entertainment pulse of movie buffs and promising unique PVR entertainment experience, these multiplexes are designed to be the most sought after entertainment destination for residents of both Delhi and Gurgaon.
On this memorable occasion PVR organized an exclusive screening of Omkara, for which this writer was invited. After the critically acclaimed Maqbool based on Macbeth, Vishal Bharadwaj once again delves into the Shakespearean world of obsession, jealousy and intense love in Omkara, an adaptation of Othello.
Found present on this occasion were the city crème de la creme like Charu Sachdeva, Geetika Ganju, Navin & Raseel Ansal, Anamika, Shibani Kashyap and Ramneek Pental. Transcending the aspirations of the cinemagoers, the brand will continue to indefinitely score higher than the prevalent standards of cinema viewing in a multi branded retail format.
PVR brand is now the largest multiplex chain in India. PVR has recently opened its multiplexes in Juhu and the largest multiplex of the city PVR Mulund at Mumbai with a ship shaped candy bar and 1,815 sears. PVR Indore and Lucknow opened in April 2006 and now with this launch the brand has achieved a platinum spectrum with 70 screens operational across the country. The Company has various cinemas under development and expects to open many of them during the course of the current financial year.
Taking India to the movies, the PVR brand has been successful in entertaining 8.8 million moviegoers last year. The current portfolio includes a pan India footprint with presence in 9 cities namely Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Faridabad, Mumbai, Indore, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Bangalore and has announced 2 of the projects already in Aurangabad and Latur and reviewing more options with signing of 22 screens in Punjab.
