1. New: New, directed by S.J.Suryah, starring Suryah as an eight-year-old in a mans body, and Simran as his wife, has had a bumper opening at the box office. The conservatives are shocked and abhor the film. Womens organizations are staging dharnas outside the theater where New is shown but youngsters just love it. They seem to enjoy the bold scenes and the dialogues laced with double meaning. Anyway, the film has been declared a super-hit. The director has now added a new song picturising Kiran. A. R. Rahmans music also is a hit with the young crowd.
2. Sullan: A lot was expected from this action film of Dhanush, directed by Ramana. Ramanas first film Thirumalai with Vijay was a super-hit. So, the Ramana-Dhanush combination was labeled as deadly before its release but the film has disappointed the public. Perhaps people didn't like a puny Dhanush in an action role. The film is doing just average business even in the first week of its release.
3. Shock: Directed by Thyagarajan, Shock is the remake of the Ram Gopal Varma film, Bhoot. The original was a big hit in Hindi, but it appears Shock is not going to repeat what Bhoot achieved in Hindi. Though Thyagrajan has made the film exactly the way RGV made Bhoot, Shock falls below average technically. The success of Bhoot was mainly because of its sound effects and that is what has let Shock down. Prashanth and Meena play the roles enacted by Ajay Devgan and Urmilla Matondkar in Bhoot.
4. Gilli: None of the new films released in July could manage to topple Gilli, which even after several weeks still manages to remain at somewhere near the top. Most of the new films except New are expected to fall down in the second week itself, and that might result in Gilli regaining its top position soon.
5. Jore: While most of the new releases are faltering at the box office, this not-so-publicised film with a lesser known hero is doing good business at the box office. Jore has Sibi Raj playing an action hero in which his real father, Satyaraj plays his reel father. This film, directed by Selva, has made amends for the disaster that Sibi Rajs first film was.
