Movie Analysis
A juvenile attempt to twine the Tarantino wine with desi Bonnie and Clyde whiskey, first timer producer director Suryaveer Singh Bhullar’s ‘Tamanchey’ shoots many blanks in this desi action, attitude ‘guy’ type exercise that aims to be ‘cool’ but turns cold.
Its muggy for anyone to justify the style with content and when another B-town filmmaker gets influenced by Tarantino, Guy Ritche, the audience knows what will be the outset in this desi Bonnie and Clyde love story with all gun but minimal fun in all those 113 minutes misfiring. Baring Krsna’s tribute to RD Burman’s ‘Par Mein Dil Pe’ from Amitabh Bachchan’s 1983 starrer ‘Mahaan’ and Richa Chaddda’s introduction during the opening sequence and some tongue and cheek dialogues here and there rest is a putt off.
Glorifying crime and criminals in this script supervised by Keshab Raj Paudel ‘Tamanchey’ is about Munna Mishra (Nikhil Dwivedi) and Babu (Richa Chadda) who meet in one of most surreal situations. Nabbed by the police for their petty crimes, a fatal road accident of the police van in which they are carried leaves all the policemen and criminals killed, leaving these two to coochicoo in coming reels.
They take refuge in under constructed buildings, romancing in train as they go ‘tomatoes’ with each other, suddenly Babu goes missing leaving Munna clueless.
They meet this time in Delhi NCR at local gang lord Rana Tau’s (Damandeep Singh) den where Munna sees Babu as the mistress of Rana.
Rest is how Munna wins his love Babu told in a tedious manner with juvenile moments like making out during a bank robbery which turns out to be unintentionally funny for anyone.
The dialogues are rusty and tongue and cheek.
The setting is okay mostly in Delhi NCR that will identify with those crowds. The production designers Navneet Behal, Suryaveer Singh Bhullar and Amit Rastogi try hard to be stylish, Sunil Tiwari art direction is more rustic during the second half. Costume Design by Nital Ganatra is adequate. Manish Jaitely as an editor doesn,t get much support from the script. Dani Sanchez Lopez lensing is easy.
Director Suryaveer Singh Bhullar’s story telling technique suffers from bad hangovers of Tarantino and B-town 90’s masala crime love stories.
Nikhil Dwivedi and Richa Chadda try their best but are handicapped by the lack of freshness in their character material. Damandeep Singh as the baddy is menacing.
Pritesh Mehta’s background score and Arko Pravo Mukherjee additional music is nice. Especially the ‘Yeh Dosti’ from Sholay inspired instrumental score.
Kaushal and Moses stunts are satisfactory..
Business Analysis
Lacking the required face value ‘Tamanche’ made at an estimate budget of around 20 crore has something for the Delhi NCR audience.. ‘Tamanchey’ has generated the maximum buzz amongst the four releases this Friday. With ‘Pyar Mein Dil Pe’ making some rounds, rustic tongue and cheek dialogues and having Richa Chaddha post ‘Fukrey’ (did well in Delhi NCR region) and ‘Gangs of Wassepur’ some legs are bound to flock initially but afterwards lack of entertainment, novelty and depth in script may turn in negative word of mouth.. ‘Tamanchey’ is likely to face hurdles in its box office journey.
Rating **
For acting, ‘Pyar mein dil pe’ song and dialogues.
